"Good Day New York" WNYW-TV (Fox) New York, NY
Dr. Barrie Soloway appeared on a December 16 broadcast of "Good Day New York" with anchor Cheryl Washington, where he explained what people can do to protect themselves from dry eyes this winter.
According to Dr. Soloway, winter presents several problem for people with healthy eyes and exacerbates problems for dry eye sufferers. "For people who wear contact lenses or glasses, winter weather can be uncomfortable. The harsh winds tend to dry people's eyes faster, and the indoor heating doesn't help matters," Dr. Soloway adds.
Cheryl then proceeds to ask the doctor what people should do indoors first in the winter.
"A humidifier in the bedroom can be extremely helpful because at night our eyes are the driest since the tears aren't being pumped to the eyees through blinking." The solution? Thick eye drops are one way to ease that problem. "I recommend that people use these thick drops at bedtime because it provides a mucus layer which enables the eye to be kept wet" Dr. Soloway tells Cheryl.
Contact lens wearers can experience uncomfortable symptoms as well. "They need to be careful with particles such as snow, sand and soot in the winter," says Dr. Soloway. Eyeglass wearers have problems when they leave a cold environment, and immediately enter a warmer one. Dr. Soloway encourages eyeglasses wearers to purchase automotive anti-fogging liquid—similar to someone might use for his/her car - to eliminate that problem.
The winter sun can also be harmful, Dr. Soloway tells Cheryl. "The winter sun sits lower in the sky and it causes a lot of glare for people." Dr. Soloway suggests that you use good sunglasses and always keep the glasses in a warm, inner pocket.
