Dr. Barrie Soloway, Surgical Director of Vista Alliance Eye Care Associates and Director of the Autonomous LADARVision Center of Excellence at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary's Vision Correction Center, appeared in the:
September 1999 issue of the national women's fashion magazine, Harper's Bazaar.
High-Tech Eyes
Writer Elizabeth Devita, provides an in-depth look at the various new vision correction surgeries available including LASIK, Intacs corneal implants to correct mild nearsightedness, and SRP (Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia) to regain perfect reading vision.
While discussing Intacs corneal implants Devita writes, "The procedure, by all accounts, is painless and consists of tunneling two tiny half-rings of plastic into the periphery of the cornea," as explained by Dr. Barrie Soloway who performs the procedure. The overall effect is a flatter cornea and better vision...Most doctors who have been inserting them, like Soloway, think they're wonderful.
Later, the article discusses ways in which people in their 40's and 50's can do away with reading glasses. She writes about the new surgery in clinical trials called SRP which eliminates the need for reading glasses (presbyopia), a surgery which Dr. Soloway is performing under clinical trials.
"....four tiny strips of plastic are inserted into the whites of the eye under the lid. The purpose is to lift the area surrounding the muscles, giving them more room to contract." Soloway says he's done the procedure on some people and to him, it dwarfs every other alternative for presbyopia. '"One guy keeps calling me to tell me what he's able to see,"' says Soloway. '"He called me recently to tell me that he's reading bus stop schedules for people at the bus depot, just because he can."'
