LASIK is the most advanced laser vision correction procedure available today!
LASIK may eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. It is a painless procedure that takes ten to twenty minutes to perform with anesthetic eye drops. The results will last a lifetime!
Utilizing the accuracy and precision of the excimer laser, LASIK changes the shape of the cornea to improve the way light is focused or "refracted" by the eye.
First, a thin layer of the cornea or the "corneal flap", is lifted up by an instrument called a microkeratome that glides across the cornea.
Then, usually in less than 60 seconds, cool, ultraviolet laser pulses from the excimer laser reshape the internal cornea with an accuracy of 0.25 microns (1/4000 of a millimeter).
By adjusting the pattern of the laser beam with a computer, it is possible to treat high levels of nearsightedness with or without astigmatism and farsightedness with or without astigmatism.
After the tissue has been reshaped, the flap is replaced in its original position. Because of the cornea's extraordinary natural Velcro-like bonding qualities, healing is rapid and does not require stitches.
In most cases LASIK is performed as an outpatient procedure in the comfort and convenience of an excimer surgical suite. The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes.
The procedure is performed using "eye drop" anesthesia. There is no pain during the procedure. Some patients report a mild discomfort the first evening, that can usually be alleviated with aspirin or Tylenol.
Most patients see a dramatic improvement in their vision within the first day. For a small group of others, vision may be blurry and fluctuate for a week or more. Most patients return to work within a day or two. Normal activity level at one week is the rule.
