Accommodating Intraocular Lens: Crystalens™ is the first and only accommodating intraocular lens available for patients with cataracts. It is designed to provide seamless near, intermediate and distance vision and works by moving in a backwards and forwards motion along the axis of the eye in response to pressure changes in the vitreous cavity and anterior chamber of the eye that result from contraction and relaxation of the ciliary muscle.

Accommodation: The process that allows the human crystalline lens to change its focus and allow the eye to see at all distances.

Cataract: Any opacity of the lens or its capsule is termed a cataract. More than 20.5 million Americans aged 40 and over have cataracts. Cataracts surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the world with 2.7 million procedures performed in the U.S. and 7.5 million procedures performed worldwide per year.

Ciliary Muscle: The muscle located in the eye that enables the lens optic to focus from near to far by moving the lens along the axis of the eye.

Monofocal Lens: Provides good distance vision. Corrective lenses or glasses are required for reading or other near-vision tasks.

Multifocal Lens: A fixed-focus lens dividing the light to see simultaneously, objects at either distance or near, but may not restore intermediate vision.

Myopia: A condition in which the eye is too long, which enables the patient to see near objects, but not see at all distances.

Hyperopia: A condition in which the eye is too short and cannot focus on near objects causing eyestrain, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches. As individual ages, distance vision also becomes blurred.

Presbyopia: A condition that occurs with age, generally noticed when patients reach their forties. As the lens enlarges, hardens and loses elasticity, it loses its ability to focus for near and intermediate vision.

Astigmatism: A defect of an optical system of the eye, which causes light rays to fail to meet in a single focal point resulting in a blurred and imperfect image. The defect is usually due to the shape of the cornea being oval instead of round.
