"12 On Health" NEWS 12 WESTCHESTER, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY
Dr. Barrie Soloway of Vista Alliance Eye Care Associates appeared in a November 30 taped segment of News 12 Westchester's "12 On Health." Anchor/reporter Lisa Larocca showed formerly farsighted patient Alicia Mclaughlin, undergo LASIK, which until recently, had only been available for nearsighted people. Dr. Soloway has been the only physician in New York State to offer this new, cutting-edge surgery to patients in clinical trials.
Alicia had been wearing glasses for 15 years and hated every minute of it. "I'm looking forward to the freedom of not having to wear them every minute— of not having them fog up."
"Correcting farsightedness is a bit more difficult than correcting nearsightedness," Dr. Soloway tells Lisa. "That's because there's less of an area to work with. The time frame for the surgery is about the same though," he adds.
As Alicia's surgery is taking place, Lisa tells viewers, "Dr. Soloway begins by numbing a portion of the eye. He uses a special clamp to keep the lid open."
Says Dr. Soloway: "You're going to see a bit of a spider come down, marking the area with vegetable dye." This is to help the surgeon see the area he needs to work on. A microkeratome is used to cut the skin of the cornea, adds Lisa. A flap is created and pushed back, exposing the cornea so the laser can work effectively.
After the surgery Alicia tells Lisa that her vision is blurry, but that she can indeed see her. "There was no pain at all," she adds. Alicia leaves the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary's Vision Correction Center with clear plastic shields, so that she doesn't scratch the affected area.
