The Visx Star S3 Smoothscan laser is the current version of the most widely used excimer laser in the United States.  Visx was the first developer of excimer laser technology in the 1980's.  They first received FDA approval for the treatment of low levels of spherical myopia in 1996.

The Visx uses a broad beam of excimer light, split into seven rotating beams to homogenize and smooth the beam.  Optical zone sizes are:

Spherical nearsightedness

6.5 millimeters

Astigmatic nearsightedness

6.5 x 5.0 millimeters

Farsightedness

6.0 millimeters

The Star S3 adds video based tracking to the venerable Visx laser. The tracking is based on two video cameras, processing the image at 160 hz with a reaction time of 10 hz. When the eye moves out of the field of tracking, the laser will automatically discontinue firing.
